PURPOSE:To cast a thin steel plate having good surface quality by providing means of sealing the spacing between a vessel for molten metal and the surfaces in the lower parts of horizontal cooling rolls tightly and supplying an inert gas to the inside of the vessel thereby maintaining the gaseous pressure in the inside constant. CONSTITUTION:The molten metal which is charged through a charging port 14 of a vessel 12 for molten metal is cooled by contacting with the surfaces in the lower parts of a pair of water cooled rolls 11, and forms a solidified metal 13 with lapse of time. The solidified metal is pulled out with the rotation of the rolls 11, whereby a thin steel plate is cast continuously. The spacing between the inside of the vessel 12 and the surfaces in the lower parts of the rolls 11 is sealed tightly with a sealing device 15 having springs 17, etc. and an inert gas is supplied into the vessel 12 through a supply pipe 16 to maintain the gaseous pressure in the vessel constant, thereby increasing the contact pressure of the rolls 11 with the molten steel. The solidified metal 13 is thus cooled uniformly, and the thin steel plate having no defects such as surface cracking is cast continuously. |
