PURPOSE:To improve the driving performance of an engine, by employing such an arrangement that the compression ratio can be changed automatically according to the load in a smooth and stepless manner. CONSTITUTION:The space formed at the back of a subsidiary piston 9 is used as a hydraulic chamber 11, and hydraulic oil is supplied continuously to the chamber 11. On the other hand, a stem 10 is provided in the manner that it is projected from the piston 9 to the outside of a subsidiary cylinder 7, and a spill port 15 is formed in the stem 10 such that hydraulic oil in the hydraulic chamber 11 is discharged therethrough. Further, a spill member 16 for opening and closing the spill port 15 to control the discharge rate of the hydraulic oil through the port 15 is fitted to a projected portion of the stem 10 in the manner that it is freely slidable in the axial direction of the stem 10. Thus, since the spill member 16 is moved axially of the stem 10 in response to change in the operational conditions of an engine, it is enabled to control the compression ratio of the engine automatically in response to the change in the operational conditions of the engine in a smooth and stepless manner. |
