<p>A shaft seal for a rotary machine having a relatively rotatable shaft (36) and housing (22, 24), in which escape of a fluid such as a cooling and lubricating oil is resisted by generating a flow of pressurised sealing fluid, such as air, and directing this into the seal, and in which the flow path for the sealing liquid includes a passage (108) which can be partially obstructed by a valve member (110) which rotates when the machine is in operation, the valve member (110) having a metering orifice (118) which is positioned in register with the opening of the said passage (108) when the speed of rotation of the machine is such as to create sufficient centrifugal force to urge the valve member (110) over the passage (108).</p> |
