A process for producing arylhydroxylamines in high yield with minimal formation of by-product arylamines. A charge mixture is prepared comprising a nitroaryl compound, a platinum catalyst, a base, a sulfur compound, and a solvent for the nitroaryl compound. The sulfur compound is one in which divalent sulfur is bonded to two other moieties or a compound reducible to such divalent sulfur compound under catalytic hydrogenation conditions. Hydrogen is introduced into the mixture while the mixture is agitated at a temperature in a range of 0-40 DEG C thereby reducing the nitro group of the nitroaryl compound to the hydroxylamine group. |
