Cartons are formed from blanks (20) in a machine having a conveyor (34), a magazine (33), a pick-out mechanism (48) feeding each blank to the conveyor with end panels (21, 22) aligned therewith, adhesive-applying equipment (35) applying a coating (31) to the area of each major end panel (21) projecting laterally beyond the minor end panel (22), adhesive-conditioning equipment (36) blowing hot air on to the adhesive coatings, a transfer mechanism (49) feeding each blank onto a die (37) having a throat (38) corresponding to the bottom panel (24), a plunger (39) for pushing each blank through the die, which has guide surfaces (40) for turning the end flaps (23) and minor end panels (22) inside the major end panels (21), rollers (103) for applying pressure to the major end panels (21) to cause the adhesive (31) to form an adequate bond to the minor end panels (22) before discharge from the die (37), a motor (41), and driving mechanisms (43 to 47) connecting the motor to the conveyor (34), the pick-out and transfer mechanisms (48,49) and the plunger (39). |
