An aqueous polymer dispersion is prepared by polymerizing at least two different olefinically unsaturated monomers in an aqueous medium at a temperature of 30 DEG to 100 DEG C. and in the presence of a polymerization initiator which forms free radicals, an emulsifier, a protective colloid and, if appropriate, a chain regulator. If carboxymethylcellulose having a specific degree of substitution is used as the protective colloid, a dispersion which is particularly suitable as a binder for a gloss paint having a gel structure is obtained. |
