In fuel supply apparatus for an internal combustion engine, hydrogen gas is generated in a reaction vessel by the reaction of an alkali or alkaline earth metal with water and passes through a duct to the intake of the engine. A vacuum-operated non-return valve admits hydrogen gas from the reaction vessel to the duct when the pressure at the engine intake is less than the pressure in the reaction vessel. Air and optionally oxygen, also pass to the engine intake through respective ducts. A valve in each duct is interlinked with those in the other ducts and the valves control the flow of gas in the respective ducts so that the flow of hydrogen to the engine intake is in controlled proportion to the flows of air and oxygen.
