PURPOSE:To manufacture a negative active material for a battery which can suppress the generation of H2 gas even when it contains only a small amount of Hg by making Zn-In-Hg powder by amalgamating Zn-In powder prepared by fixing In on the surfaces of Zn powder. CONSTITUTION:After In or an In compound is dissolved in an acid, the solution is diluted with water so as to prepare an aqueous solution of a given In concentration. Next, Zn powder is immersed in the aqueous solution so as to fix In on the surfaces of Zn powder. Then thus obtained Zn-In powder, after being dried or non-dried, is put in an aqueous alkali solution, and the mixture is subjected to preliminary stirring. Next, the mixture is stirred while Hg metal is added dropwise to the mixture, and grains produced in the mixture is washed with water. After that, the grains are dried at low temperature so as to manufacture Zn-In-Hg powder. By thus combining In with Hg, a negative active material for a battery which, even when it contains only a small amount of Hg, has a gas-generation suppressing effect no less than equal to that of an amalgamated zinc can be manufactured. |
