PURPOSE:To prepare ethanol in high selectivity with small amounts of by- products, by reacting methanol with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing Co, an acid of an element selected from the oxygen family (except oxygen) and an alkylphosphine as active components. CONSTITUTION:Methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen to prepare ethanol. In the process, a catalyst containing cobalt, e.g. cobalt octacarbonyl, an acid of an element selected from the oxygen family (except oxygen), e.g. sulfuric acid, a sulfuric ester or methanesulfonic acid, and an alkylphosphine, e.g. tri-n-butylphosphine or triphenylphosphine, as active components is used. The atomic ratio of the cobalt: element selected from the oxygen family: phosphorus is 1:(0.01-1):(0.1-2), preferably 1:(0.05-0.5):(0.5-1.8). The reaction temperature is 150-300 deg.C, preferably 200-260 deg.C. |
