The vertical milling machine has a workpiece feed device which can be operated either by a hand-wheel(27) or an electric motor(37). The hand-wheel is fitted with one half of a dog clutch(55) which is normally kept disengaged from the other half(57) by a spring(69). The motor shaft(39) has a pinion(51) which drives a second pinion forming a part(79) of a second dog clutch drive(77) (79) which drives the bevel pinion(73). This bevel pinion(73) drives a gear(59) forming part of the first dog clutch(57). A lever operates both clutches in such a manner that if one clutch is engaged, the other is disengaged.
