The invention proposes a system and a method for removal of nuclear waste. The waste is mixed with glass components, fused, drawn into fibres and formed into a cable, the fibre diameter and the arrangement of the fibres in the cable being selected such that the cable can be wound onto a carrier. The cable is then transported through an underground duct to a buffer store and finally to a storage site deep under the surface of the earth, where it is wound onto a carrier for long-term storage. The cable is fitted with a monitoring system based on optical fibres and with a guide piece, with the aid of which it can be retrieved once again from the long-term storage site if the integrity of the storage site is threatened or violated. The cable can also be retrieved once again for the purpose of harvesting specific nuclides in the fibre or for renewed reprocessing with additional nuclear waste material. |
