In the process, titanium tetrachloride is converted to titanium dioxide by reaction with water vapour and/or oxygen in the presence of inorganic pigment particles. In a preliminary step (a), the pigment particles are first impregnated with titanium tetrachloride vapours in a virtually water vapour-free atmosphere avoiding condensation of liquid titanium tetrachloride. In the following step (b) the titanium tetrachloride sorbed only on the surface or in the pores of the pigment particles is converted to titanium dioxide.
