The turbomachine e.g. a hydraulic thruster, has a self-retracting screen 17 comprising a number of interlocking balls 19, the ends 21 of which are pivotally attached to the periphery of the turbomachine inlet. The bails 19 are elliptical in cross-section such that the major diameters of the elliptical cross- section when the screen is closed are substantially parallel to the turbomachine inlet stream.
