PURPOSE:To obtain a direct positive image having improved sharpness and edge effect by processing a direct positive photosensitive silver halide material contg. a specified fogging agent in a photographic emulsion layer or other layer in the presence of a specified compound. CONSTITUTION:The titled material contg. a compound represented by formula I (where each of R<1> and R<2> is H, an aliphatic residue, an aromatic residue or a heterocyclic residue; each of R<3> and R<4> is H or an aliphatic residue; and X is a bivalent aromatic residue) as a fogging agent in a photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer or other hydrophilic colloidal layer coated on a support is developed in the presence of a compound represented by formula II (where each of R<1> and R<2> is H or an aliphatic residue; R<1> and R<2> may bond to each other to form a ring; R3 is a bivalent aliphatic group; X is a simple bonding chain or a bivalent heterocyclic ring contg. N, O or S; and M is H, an alkali or alkaline earth metal, a quat. ammonium salt or the like). The sharpness and edge effect of the resulting positive image can be improved. The reversal performance is independent of the bromine ion concn. and pH of a developer, and a change of the reversal performance due to unevenness in the amount of the added fogging agent can be improved.
