NEW MATERIAL:A thiazolidine derivative of formula I (n is 3-6). EXAMPLE:5-(6, 7, 8, 9-Tetrahydro-5H-benzocycloheptadien-2-yl)-thiazolidine-2, 4-dione. USE:Preventive or remedy for diabetic complication, e.g., diabetic cataract or diabetic neuropathy: since it has low toxicity, it can be given without anxiety on side-effects even in long-lasting administration. It causes no irritation, when it is used as eye drops, too, and inhibits the accumulation of sorbitol in lenses. PREPARATION:The reaction between a compound of formula II and thiourea usually in a solvent, preferably at 60-130 deg.C is followed by hydrolysis of the product of formula III in the presence of a mineral acid to give the compound of formula I .
