This invention relates to a water barrier gel composition comprising from about 0.1 to 5% by weight of water absorbent material and from about 95 to 99.9% by weight of water, based on the weight of the total composition, and a method of applying a layer of the waterbarrier gel composition to a surface to prevent ignition or to protect the surface from heat damage.
