When a sample of coke is taken to check the size, dryness, strength, etc. of the pellets, it is important to select samples from as near the coking chamber as possible, so that tests can be carried out before the material degrades, and can also tell the operator about the condition of the coking chamber. This sampling appts. extracts a large sample from the stream of coke as it emerges down a slope (30) from the coking chamber. The coke slides into a tray (32). When sufficient coke is in the tray, lifting motors (34) mounted on a crane gantry (33), lift the tray clear of the slope and carry it to a dividing mechanism. The latter (36) takes smaller samples of the coke in the tray, and the remainder of the tray contents are returned to the processing plant.
