PURPOSE:To obtain a parent material having smooth surface free from defects to damage mechanical strength, by etching chemically the surface of the glass parent material for optical fiber, heating it, forming a layer of synthetic quartz glass on it. CONSTITUTION:A parent material for optical fiber is immersed in hydrofluoric acid, etc., and the surface is chemically etched. Immediately after the parent material is subjected to flame abrasion or heated by laser, SiCl4 in gaseous phase is introduced to oxyhydrogen flame to form SiO2, which is deposited on the surface of the parent material to form a layer of transparent synthetic quartz glass. Since the parent material having ideal surface free from defects is obtained by this method, optical fibers having uniform strength and high strength can be drawn. |
