The closure device has a closure membrane (4) which is fitted into a can body (2) and which is subdivided into a first membrane part (8) and a second membrane part (12). The first membrane part (8) engages over the can edge (6) and the second membrane part (12) covers the can opening. The membrane parts (8, 12) are glued into the can body (2) at a spacing (a). The separation of the closure membrane (4) into the first membrane part (8) and the second membrane part (12) is carried out on a tool die (24) which is provided with an annular groove (26) in the area of the intended separation. A blade (28) engages in the annular groove and cuts the closure membrane (4), at least the first membrane part (8) having a cut edge (30) engaging in the annular groove (26).
