A mixture of novel bromine-containing oligomeric ethers which contain structural units of the formula I <IMAGE> in which X = Br, Cl or H, n = 0 to 4, and the y radicals, independently of one another, are Br, Cl or H, where X + y together contain at least two Br, and Z is a direct bond, -CH2-, -C(CH3)2- or -SO2-, is formed on reaction of xylylene dihalides with bisphenols in the presence of alkaline compounds or with alkali or alkaline earth metal salts of bisphenols at from 85 to 150 DEG C. Terminal OH or halogen groups can be deactivated by etherification by means of monohaloalkyl compounds or monophenols. The mixtures are used as flameproofing agents for plastics.
