In the prodn. of aluminium wire by melting aluminium contg. max. 0.7% impurities, continuously casting the melt, naturally cooling the cast strand at about 100 K/sec. and then working to wire, the cast strand is cooled at a rate of at least 2.5 times the natural cooling rate (pref. at at least 1000 K/sec.), using a liq. or solid coolant, at the end of the first arrest during cooling. The compsn. of the sec. solid phase (eutectic of impurities with aluminium) is offset in the direction of the metastable eutectic (the supersaturated soln.) to avoid redn. in mechanical properties, without affecting the desired crystalline structure of the aluminium matrix which solidifies first. The resulting wire has unchanged electrical properties but has increased bending fatigue resistance, after heat treatment, similar to that of copper wire.
|
