PURPOSE:To obtain an optical deflection element of a low cost with a simple driving circuit, by providing heating electrodes on one surface and polarizing the light irradiated in parallel with the heating surface by the heat generated from a DC power source. CONSTITUTION:Comb-shaped electrodes 21, 22 are formed of Cr-Au, etc. on one surface of a crystal element 10 of SrTiO3 or the like. Electricity is conducted from a DC power source 30 to electrodes 21, 22 to heat the element 10. when parallel laser light 40 is projected to the heating surface, the density of the crystal is small on the heating surface side and large on the opposite side on account of a temp. difference between the heating surface and an opposite surface 23; therefore, the laser light 4 emits the polarized light which is refracted to the side opposite to the heating surface as shown by a solid line. An alkali halide crystal such as Al2O3, BeO or LiF may be used for the element 10, and a resistor film may be used for the electrodes in such a case. It is also possible to obtain an X-Y optical polarization element by combining two pieces of the optical polarization elements having orthogonally intersected heating surfaces. The constitution of the driving circuit is thus made simple and low in cost. |
