In the manufacture of open-topped bags from sealable material, a pressure is exerted by a bottom-forming ram (22) against the upper side of the transverse jaws (23), which have been moved together, to form a bottom fantail seam. The transverse jaws (23), the severing knives (25), the bottom ram (22) and the bottom folders movable transversely to the transverse jaws are arranged to be height-displaceable by means of a carriage (8). In addition, the bottom-forming ram (22) is displaceable relative to the carriage by means of an eccentric drive (10, 11) and a linkage (9, 12-20), in such a way that, in the end positions of the stroke, the bottom-forming ram (22) is lifted off from the position pressing against the transverse jaws (23) and is in the pressing position only during its downward movement. The result is that even relatively thick material can be perfectly formed and sealed, without having to accept a delay in the working cycle. <IMAGE>
