The invention relates to a process for coating the surface of a metal object, in particular a steel strip. To improve the corrosion resistance and/or the surface hardness and/or to achieve a particular colour, metals, metal compounds or their mixtures are introduced as powders or granular material into the layer of a molten metal deposited on the cleaned and heated metal surface. Preferably, the powders or granular material are at a higher temperature which is above the liquidus temperature of the metal.
