A starter device for the engine of a motor vehicle with automatic transmission permits rapid restarting of the engine following a sudden engine stoppage by turning the ignition key switch to a start position, provided that the brake is firmly applied, and even when the gear selector lever of the automatic transmission is in positions other than the neutral position or the park position. The starter device according to the invention essentially comprises a brake switch connected parallel to a neutral position switch and a park position switch in addition to the usual elements of a starter device for a motor vehicle with automatic transmission, the brake switch being closed when the brake is applied.
