The invention can be used on flat knitting machines, the needles of which are equipped with a butt which, as a result of the interaction between a pressure-cam part, acting on the needles transversely to the driving-out direction, and a first spring, acting in the opposite direction, either is intended to cooperate with driving-out cam parts or can be moved out of the cam channel, there being provided for retaining the needles in one of these two positions a retaining sinker which can be influenced by at least one controllable electromagnet, moved along the needle bed, and by a second spring. The object of the invention is to provide a rapid and reliable needle selection by simple technical means, for which purpose the retaining sinker is arranged underneath the needle so as to be longitudinally displaceable and can be laid with its lower end against the magnet by a cam part counter to the force of the second spring, the part of the retaining sinker which can be laid against the control magnet possessing relatively low mass and being connected to the basic body of the retaining sinker by means of a third spring. <IMAGE>
