Algae plants are broken down in a processing sequence which involves cutting the plants to suitable lengths (12) and feeding them to a mincer (14) which in turn feeds the minced plants to a first colloid mill (16) from which the material is pumped into a holding tank (22). Part of the material is pumped from the tank (22) into a second colloid mill (30) and thereafter taken to a high pressure pump (40) which feeds the material to a first high pressure (500 bar) homogenizer valve (44) and thence through a final low pressure (50 bar) homogenizer pressure valve (48) from which the comminuted material is withdrawn with a particle size of about 50 microns. <IMAGE> |
