The invention relates to a charging apparatus having a circuit for carrying out periodic recharging during the charging of lead accumulators, especially maintenance-free lead accumulators for a vehicle drive, having a charge limiting switch which can be switched off automatically and operates a limit switch. In order to achieve completely automatic recharging after reaching the defined charge/discharge cycles, the following features are provided: a) a cycle counter for defining the charge cycles carried out since the last recharging and for producing a corresponding cycle signal, b) an adjustable reference signal source, corresponding to a specific number of charge cycles, c) a comparator circuit, which compares the cycle signal supplied by the cycle counter with the reference signal supplied by the reference signal source (6) and, if they correspond ca) supplies a switch-off blocking signal to the charge limiting circuit, cb) supplies a switching signal to a delay circuit which switches off the limit switch once a specific, adjustable time has elapsed, cc) supplies a reset signal to the cycle counter. t
