A lock for a divided backrest for the rear seats of a motor vehicle whose backrest halves can be pivoted forwards individually and together about an axle which is located at the lower edge of the said halves and directed in the transverse direction of the vehicle has arranged on each side of the backrest on the inner wall of the body of the vehicle and to the sides of the backrest halves locks and latching elements which interact with one another and are manually actuable. In the dividing gap between the two backrest halves an additional locking device for releasably locking the two backrest halves with respect to one another is provided and the additional locking device can be actuated in each case simultaneously and together with one of the two lateral locking elements. In this way, a releasable connection between the two backrest halves is advantageously produced in their folded-back position in such a way that in the event of a head-on collision of the vehicle the load located behind the rear seat cannot pass through the gap between the two backrest parts into the passenger space and injure the vehicle occupants. The additional locking device does not in any way prevent the backrest halves being pivoted separately here since they can each be actuated together and at the same time with the respective lateral locking device for the backrest halves.
