The invention relates to an X-ray generator having an X-ray tube which has a pot-shaped anode (8, 42) whose lateral inner edge is scanned by an electron beam (22). Such tubes are used in apparatuses for investigating the internal structure of bodies. In this case, it is desirable to be able to achieve a higher loading, that is to say a higher beam yield (24). To this end, the invention provides that both the pot anode (8, 42) and the cathode (14, 40) are supported such that they can rotate about the common centre of these two parts. The increase in the load capacity of the focus spot (23), which is important for carrying out layer investigations of bodies, becomes possible by rotating the anode (8, 42) and the cathode (14, 40) in opposite directions.
