发明名称 LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY
摘要 PURPOSE:To obtain a display which has fast responsiveness and is free from color shading by forming the thickness of a liquid crystal layer of a ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibiting polychroism or a ferroelectric liquid crystal dissolved therein with a polychromatic dye to the size at which liquid crystal molecules can form spirals and directing the spiral axis in an approximately specified direction in approximately parallel to the substrates. CONSTITUTION:The thickness of a liquid crystal layer 1 consisting of a ferroelectric liquid crystal which exhibits a chiral smectic C phase or chiral smectic H phase and which itself exhibits polychroism or a ferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal dissolved therein with a polychromatic dye is made 4-20mu at which liquid crystal molecules 10 can form spirals, and said layer is sandwiched between transparent substrates 2, 2 on which transparent electrodes 3, 3 and orientation control films 4, 4 are formed successively. The films 4, 4 are rubbed in such a way that the spiral axis 12 of the liquid crystal is directed in approximately parallel to the substrates 2, 2 and in an approximately specified direction. A polarizer 8 is attached to at least one of the substrates. The direction (shown by an arrow) where a voltage E is applied between the electrodes 3 and 3 is changed to make the long axis directions of the liquid crystal molecules 10 and the dye molecules 11 in an opposite direction to the direction of the axis 12 as shown in the states A, B, whereby the display device which is free from color shading and has excellent responsiveness is obtained.
