5Spreadable thixotropic coating composition suitable for rust removal and containing polyvinylpyrrolidone, water and a thixotropic agent which is either xanthan gum or water-soluble crosslinked interpolymer of maleic anhydride, monovinyl alkyl ether and crosslinking agent. The composition has a pH between about 1.5 and 7.0 is applied to rusty metal surfaces and allowed to dry. During drying the rust becomes incorporated into the coating which is then easily removed.
