Acetophenone derivs. II(R2', R3=C1˜C4 alkoxy; R4=C6H5-OH optionally substituted with one of C1˜C4 alkyl, alkoxy, allyloxy, alkylthiom dialkylamino, amino, cyano, or furyl, pyridyl, thienyl, pyrrolyl, optionally alkyl-substituted; when R4'=methoxyphenyl, R2', R3'≠methoxy or ethoxy simultaneously), which are useful as anti-viral agent, were prepd. from the compd.III and R4'-CHO, with the basic catalyst in organic solvent. Thus, 2'-hydroxy-4',6'-dimethoxy-acetophenone and anisaldehyde in EtOH for 3 days with 50% aq. KOH at room temp., which gave 2'-gydroxy-4,4',6'-trimethoxychalcone.
