PURPOSE:To improve the starting characteristic, by providing a shortcircuit discharge tube conducting to a curved main discharge tube while providing a control means on said short-circuit discharge tube for increasing the discharge impedance higher than that of main discharge tube as the start of discharge. CONSTITUTION:A U-shaped main discharge tube 1 is provided with electrodes 2a, 2b at the opposite ends while a shortcircuit discharge tube 3 is provided near the opposite ends of the discharge tube 1 where the opposite ends of the discharge tube 3 are conducted with the discharge tube 1 while opening. An electromagnet 4 is provided near the discharge tube 3 to produce the magnetic field for controlling the discharge where the direction of the field is crossing with the axis of the discharge tube. The electromagnet 4 is connected to a power source 5 while the other end is connected to an electrode 2a. The other end of the electrode 2a is connected to a starter 7, the other end of which is connected to the electrode 2b. The other end of the electrode 2b is connected through a lighting device 6 to the power source 5. With such structure, the discharge will occur in the discharge tube 3 at the starting, and the potential gradient of plasma will be increased by the magnetic field. Consequently the discharge impedance of the discharge tube 3 will increase to transfer the discharge to the discharge tube 1. |
