PURPOSE:To enable high-density vertical magnetic recording, by forming a thin film having Kerr effect and smaller coercive force than magnetic flux density for magnetizing a vertically magnetizable film on the magnetizable film and by uniting the films in a body. CONSTITUTION:A thin Mn-Bi film 3 having Kerr effect is formed by vapor deposition on a vertically magnetizable Co-Cr film 2 formed by sputtering. Signals such as upward signals 1 and downward signals 0 are recorded in the film 2 in accordance with the direction of magnetization as shown by arrows in the figure. When the coercive force of the film 3 is smaller than the magnetic flux density of the film 2, the film 3 is also magnetized by magnetic fields leaked from the film 2 as shown by arrows in the figure. Gd-Tb-Fe is suitable for use as the material of the film 3 besides Mn-Bi. High-density recording and reproduction can be carried out by making use of Kerr effect. |
