PURPOSE:To perform switching to intermediate charging operation easily by retreating a movable hearth on the furnace tail side to retreat the material on the extension of an intermediate charging port then charging the material through the intermediate charging port and conveying the material only with the movable hearth on the furnace top side. CONSTITUTION:Movable hearths 8, 9 at waiting points W, W' are moved upward cooperatively and only the movable hearth 8 on the furnace tail side is retreated to divide the material Mm and Mn, whereafter the hearths 8, 9 are moved downward to place the material Mm, Mn on a stationary hearth 4. The hearth 9 is then moved backward, upward and forward to convey the material Mn by one pitch to the furnace top side. The hearth 8 in the down position is advanced and the hearths 8, 9 are thereafter moved to the points W, W' where the hearths are stopped. In this state, the material M2 is charged through an intermediate charging port 5. The switching to the intermediate charging operation is thus completed; thereafter, the hot ingot M2 is charged through the port 5 at a specified interval, and the material M2 is conveyed only with the hearth 9. |
