PURPOSE:To permit a highly accurate swirl control by a method wherein the suction air control device is provided with a speed detector detecting the speed of suction air and a suction control valve is controlled in accordance with the engine speed as well as the load of the engine and the speed of suction air. CONSTITUTION:The swirl in a lower side path is increased when the path is limited by the obstruction of the suction control valve 7. Consequently, the most suitable swirl may be obtained in accordance with the opening degree of the suction control valve 7 in the lower side path. A control circuit 9 receives the signals of detected engine speed and flow rate from the revolution detector 8a and a flow rate detector 8b to operate a predetermined suction air speed while receives the signal of actual suction air speed from a flow speed detector 8c to compare the actual suction air speed with the predetermined suction air speed. In accordance with this comparison, an opening degree command is corrected and an actuator 70 is driven to correct the opening degree of the suction control valve 7.
