Method and an installation are claimed for evacuating liq. which has percolated through and gas generated in a compacted pile of domestic rubbish etc. Both the liq. and the gas are collected into branches of a horizontal network of perforated or porous pipes buried in the pile. The pipe is sleeved with a protective jacket of porous material, pref. a layer of annular section of crushed stones held in place by an outer wrapping of mesh. Pref. at least two superimposed vertically-spaced networks of pipes are installed in the pile. Pref. one network is located right at the bottom of the pile on top of a waterproof sheet. Pref. the perforated or porous pipes of the network are made of plastic. Pref. the network pipes are connected to at least one vertical chimney through which gas rises to be collected. Some of the tubes are connected to a drain through which liq. is evacuated. Used for the disposal of household rubbish by dumping. Dumping costs about half as much as incineration. The new method prevents the soil around the dump being soured by water which has percolated through the waste; it also prevents gas polluting the atmos. and collects it for use as a fuel.
