<p>The pod is mechanically presented to a straight blade with the longitudinal axis of the pod parallel to and aligned with the cutting edge of the blade. This relationship is maintained throughout the cutting operation. Pref. the machine has a wheel with a circumferential channel into which a pod is loaded as the wheel rotates. The channel automatically aligns the longitudinal axis of the pod with the cutting edge of the blade which is secant to the circumference of the wheel. The wheel channel contains driving dog which pushes the pod against the blade as the wheel rotates. The wheel is slotted to allow the blade to pass through. The wheel channel pref. becomes progressively narrower as the wheel dia. in the channel decreases, i.e. the wheel is of 'diabolo' section. The wheel pref. delivers cut pods into rotary screening drum to separate beans from shell. Longitudinal rather than radial cutting makes guiding pods of different lengths practical. The longitudinal cut offers better access for exit of beans. The operation is mechanised for high output from single operator.</p> |
