The present assembly, intended to severe cables, wires or similar, is comprised of a knife-holder unit (1) and an actuating device (21), the latter comprising a manually operated triggering member (24) and means (21, 23) to support the knife-holder unit separably from the actuating device. The actuating device may be provided for a triggering operation at a certain distance from the wire to be severed or it may be provided as a gun type device (41). The knife-holder unit may further be used in a self-contained mode without any actuating device.
