A method for controlling a heat-regulating valve (1) having a thermostat and a heating element (20) which is allocated to the actuating cylinder of said valve and according to which, when the heating is switched on, the valve (1) is closed by a heating current at a higher voltage in order to reduce the temperature for a limited time, after which the heating element (20) is supplied with the voltage necessary for regulating at the reduced temperature. A device for carrying out this method, having a timer element (37) which, with the aid of a two-way switch (26), connects either one pole (23) at the full control voltage to the heating element (20) or, via a switch (30) which is operated via a time switch (31), a contact (29) at a voltage which is less than that required for regulating the reduced temperature to the heating element (20). <IMAGE>
