In order to match the brine requirement needed to regenerate the ion exchange filling to the local degree of water hardness and, consequently, to the degree of exhaustion of the ion exchange filling, a water collection container (4) is provided above the salt container in a softening device. The volume of water which can be accommodated in the water collection container and which is used to introduce an appropriate amount of brine from the salt container into the ion exchange container can be adjusted to the local water hardness by means of a stopcock (15) which can be of compact design and can be rotated satisfactorily by means of a setting knob (13). Depending on its rotary setting, the stopcock provides a connection to one of a plurality of riser channels (21-23) by means of a transverse bore (16). The level of the openings of the riser channels of different height determines the possible filling levels (11, 26, 27) of the water collection container. If the stopcock is in a closed position, the water collection container can be filled up to its upper overflow edge (7) at a further filling level (6). <IMAGE>
