The invention relates to a connecting element with a clip effect, which is preferably produced from sheet metal without any metal-cutting operations. The compression force is applied by an elastic head part, constructed as a conical flange, and at least one resiliently elastic locking element. Once it has been pressed into a hole, the locking element acts as a clip outwards and thus secures the connection. Predetermination of the initial tension and tolerance compensation for the clamping height are ensured by the resilient construction of the head part. Automatic and semi-automatic assembly of the connecting elements are possible. <IMAGE>
