The invention relates to an engine, which is driven by the conversion of the potential energy of a high-pressure gas into kinetic energy. In the case of the expansion engine described here, the expansion chamber is arranged concentrically with the engine shaft, so that the piston located inside this can only move in a circle about it. The rotary movement of the piston is transmitted directly to the engine shaft by means of a lever arm. In order then to be able to apply the full gas pressure to the piston area in the desired direction of rotation, the expansion chamber is divided by a shut-off element. This shut-off element is, however, forced to open and frees the piston path each time shortly before the piston reaches it. The object of the invention is to detoxify the air which we breathe, especially in cities, by reducing or even completely removing combustion engine exhaust gases, in order to achieve the prerequisite for improved health and ecology. The engine, moreover, is small, uncomplicated, quiet in operation, environmentally friendly and cold. <IMAGE>
