The backpressure acting on the exhaust pipe (1) of an internal combustion engine, especially on vehicles, is reduced by positive measures, to which end on the one hand a fan can be inserted directly into the exhaust line or the exhaust gases at the exhaust end are accelerated by a bypass flow, the speed of which is greater than that of the emerging exhaust gas flow. For generating this an ejector may be used with a bypass nozzle (6) formed between bypass sleeve (5) and a diffuser sleeve (3), which nozzle narrows in the direction of the flow and thereby accelerates the bypass flow carried by backpressure when running. In addition the inner exhaust gas flow in the diffuser cavity (34) is reduced from the inlet velocity v1 to the outlet velocity v3, which then at the annular edge (38) forming the exhaust end is again reduced to less than the outlet velocity v4 of the bypass flow if the inlet velocity v2 of the bypass flow is more than five times greater than the inlet exhaust gas velocity v1. In order to increase performance and to improve fuel efficiency with a reduced quantity of exhaust gas, this is released into the atmosphere with less harm to the environment. In the case of too low a speed of travel or when at a standstill a fan delivering directly into the inlet opening (61) of the bypass nozzle can also be switched on. <IMAGE>
