In a refrigerant compressor whose crankcase 129 is vented to compressor suction 114, a passive lubrication system has a lubrication-vent path arrangement 148 to 160 which vents the crankcase while also ensuring lubrication of the compressor's critical bearing surfaces 66, 70 using oil entrained in the refrigerant, and centrifugal action is utilized to always maintain some amount of oil in the crankcase to ensure lubrication of the critical bearing surfaces under all operating conditions while also minimizing the amount of oil permitted to circulate in the refrigerant circuit, for improved air conditioning performance.
