The SAW filter has a transducer comprising two comb shaped electrodes whose fingers are interdigitated by an amount dependant on a weighting function. The transducer is on the surface of a substrate that supports SAW waves. The substrate has absorbant material on its surface. This material covers a part of the comb shaped electrode at the place where the teeth interleave. The absorber adjoins the transducer on the surface and the absorbant material extends from this absorber. The absorbant material alters the filter's frequency response characteristics without having to change the electrode pattern.
