An apparatus and method for rapidly quenching plastic film (F) especially tubular film is disclosed. A curtain of aerated coating liquid is gently directed onto the film (F) surface in such a way that disturbances to the film are avoided and the film is stabilized in its path of travel. Novel film flattening mechanisms (80) and film pleating means are also provided.
