PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound with a high efficiency in reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst, by using a ruthenium compound, an imidazole and a specific metal, e.g. cobalt, and/or a compound thereof as catalytic components. CONSTITUTION:Carbon monoxide is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst to prepare ethylene glycol. In the process, (A) a ruthenium compound, (B) an imidazole and (C) at least one metal selected from cobalt, nickel, platinum, palladium and iridium and/or a metallic compound thereof is used as catalytic components, and the reaction is carried out under relatively mild conditions to give the ethylene glycol with a high efficiency. The ratios of the respective components are as follows: 0.5-500mol based on one gram atom ruthenium, component (B) this is not the case where the component (B) in a solvent amount is used and 0.1-10.0atm ratio between the component (C) and the ruthenium atoms. |
