<p>The display is made up of a matrix of points, switched to illuminate the appropriate matrix cells to form the desired character. The light is transmitted through optical fibres to each matrix cell, resulting in a small diameter beam of strong light emanating from the fibre. The optical fibre dimensions limit the display size, and for larger displays a divergent pyramidal prism is used to diffuse the light from the optic fibre across a larger area. - The optic fibre (1) is fitted to enter the prism at the narrow end of the pyramid. The light is internally reflected along the walls of the prism and transmitted through a pyramidal lens at the wide end of the reflecting pyramid. The display may be in the form of a rectangle divided into two independent areas defined by two isosceles triangles.</p> |
